New Hyundai Ioniq & Kia Model EV Chargers – which is best?

Maximise your Car’s Potential (without overpaying)

7kW is the Sweet Spot – even for the 800V champions
  • The 800V system onboard is for DC rapid charging. For AC home charging, the onboard charger in the Ioniq 6 or EV9, for example, is 10.5kW (or 11kW) – making a standard 7kW home charger a perfect match….it will charge at its full AC capacity.
  • Unless you have three-phase power to your home, or a 3-phase supply in general, a 22kW unit is typically an unnecessary expense. Your 7kW charger wil ldeliver a full battery overnight, each and every time.

Maximise Battery Longevity on your shiny new EV

Your big investment deserves Smart Charging
  • Whilst the battery technology is highly-advanced, the principles of lithium-ion batteries still all apply…they still need cared for. Battery degradation prevention is key – protect your ev’s battery health on your Ioniq or Kia EV9.
  • You can use your smart charger’s app to set daily limits to 80-90%. Your car’s infotainment system can do this – but the charger acts as a failsafe and is usually easier to manage.
  • You can sync your charger’s schedule with the electric vehicle’s ‘Departure Time’ feature. The car will finishcharging just before you leave – avoiding it sitting at 100% for hours.

What do Hi EV offer you?

6 Benefits of Smart Chargers & using Hi EV for your Ioniq 6 or EV9

Hi EV understand EV’s – it’s in our name. Saying hello to your new EV doesn’t need to be a daunting experience – acquiring and installing your new EV Charger is made a seamless experience. Here’s some details:

Maximum AC Charging Speed – Guaranteed

Your Ioniq 6 or EV9 has a powerful 11kW onboard. Standard 7kW smart chargers from Hi EV deliver power at the maximum rate to your home’s single-phase supply can support. Hi EV ensure your installation is perfectly calibrated so your car never charges slower than it should.

Slash Charging costs by 75%

Pair your Hi EV-installed smart charger with a specialisty energy tariff like Octopus Intelligent Go. The charger automatically schedules your charging to off-peak hours – slashing your electricity cost to as low as 7.5p/kWh. This can reduce a full charge on your EV9 from £30 to just £7!

Battery Health Preservation

Extend the life of your EV’s most valuable component. Use the smart charger’s app to set a daily charge limit of 80% – reducing long-term stress on the battery. Combine this with scheduled departure features, and this ensures your car isn’t sitting at 100% charge for extended periods – actively slowing degredation.

App Control & Smart Home Integration

Manage your charging from your phone. Start, stop, and schedule sessions remotely from the manufacturer’s app. Hi EV ensures your charger is correctly set up to integrate with your car’s own app and your smart home ecosystem – putting you in complete control.

No Fuss, Integrated Installations

Our experts at Hi EV are trained on the specifics of the E-GMP platform, used by your Ioniq 6 and EV9. We guarantee full compatibility, ensuring features such as scheduled departure, and charge limiting work perfectly in harmony between your car and your new charger, for a seamless user experience.

Neat, Professional & Certified Installation

Your new, or used premium electric vehicle deserves a premium installation. Hi EV provides clean, tidy and fully-certified installations using high-quality materials. We ensure the installation is not onlyu safe & compliant with all UK regulations, but also aesthetically-pleasing – with discreet cable-management that complements your home.

Beyond Speed – Battery Stewardship…from Hi EV

Charging Sweet Spot (80/20)

Lithium-ion batteries – just like the one in your EV, are happiest between 20% and 80% charge,. Consistently charging to 100% and leaving it there for long periods, accelerates chemical degradation.

The Hi EV Solution is that whilst your car has a charge limit setting, a smart charger, such as a Zappi, Ohme Pro, Project EV or Hypervolt provides a second layer of control. You set the daily charge limit of 80% in the app. For longer trips, you can easily override it to 100%.

Scheduled Departure: The ‘Full Tank, Perfect Timing” Trick

Allowing your EV to sit at 100% charge overnight is unnecessary. Instead, use the scheduled departure feature.

How does this work? In your EV’s infotainment system, or your smart charger’s app, you set your daily departure time (e.g. 7:30AM). The system will calculate the required charging time and only finish juicing up the battery just before you leave. This avoids the battery sitting at peak voltage for hours, significantly preserving its long-term health.

Pre-Conditioning Mastery

On frosty Scottish mornings, a pre-warmed car and battery is a luxury. But by using the battery to heat itself saps the range before you’ve even driven off. So, what’s the smart way?

In using your scheduled departure, the car will utilise power from your charger to warm the battery and cabin. You can then drive off with a full, warm battery, delivering maximum efficiency and range from the first mile.

We don’t just install a Box. We configure your charging Ecosystem.

Tariff Integration: The Secret to 1p-Per Mile Driving

Your Ioniq 6 or EV9 has a large battery. Filling it on a standard electricity tariff is expensive. In utilising a Hi EV smart charger, you can access specialist EV Tariffs such as Octopus Intelligent Go, or Intelligent Flux.

This brings tremendous cost savings – with the tariffs offering electricity for as little as 5p per kWh overnight….let’s say 7.5p per kWh for good measure. In this case, this can slash the cost of a full charge from over £25 to under £8. For a typical driver, this eans fuel costs of around 2p per mile – a fraction of the cost of petrol.

The Tethered vs. Socketed Debate

Tethetered: The cable is permamently attached. It’s convenient for daily use – just grab the plug and connect. We and our brand partners use high-quality, weatherproof cables that are built to last.

Socketed: A bare socket where you plug in a separate cable (untethered). This offers flexibility if you have multiple EV’s with different charging ports, or if you have differing distances between your home/flat and your EV’s location.

Aesthetic & Functional Installation

We understand fully that your car is a design statement – a piece of beautiful engineering, outside and in. Why scrimp on the EV Charger installation? All of our installations are neat, discreet, and use professional, lateral-thinking to ensure as an aesthetically-pleasing installation as possible.

Frequently Asked Questions (Hi EV FAQ’s)

Can’t i just use the granny cable that came with the car?

You can, yes, but that doesn’t mean it’s right. You basicallyh shouldn’t use it as a primary solution. It’s painfully slow (adding circa 10 miles of range per hour), poses potential safety risk with prolonged use on domestic sockets, and also prevents you from accessing smart tariffs and battery protection features. It’s ultimately an emergency tool (like the glue in your tyre pump), not a daily-use tool.

What if my consumer unit/fuse box needs upgraded?

This is common in older UK homes. Our certified surveyors will conduct a full assessment of your property, in the areas required for a domestic EV installation. Quite often, a smart charger with Dynamic Load Management can avoid a costly consumer unit upgrade (£1,000+) by intelligently sharing your home’s available power.

How long does a full domestic installation take?

A standard installation is typically complete in a single day, causing minimal disruption. We leave you with a fully-tested, operational and demonstrated charging station.

The Ioniq 6 has V2L (Vehicle-to-Load). Can I use a special charger to power my home (V2H)?

The Ioniq 6 and Kia EV9 support V2L (Vehicle-to-Load), which allows you to power devices via a special adaptor from the car’s charging port or interior socket. However, this is different from V2H (Vehicle-to-home), which requires a specific bi-directional charger, and a certified home integration system to back-feed power into your house wiring. Whilst this technology is coming, it’s not yet widely available or compatible with these moels in the UK (Ioniq 6 and EV9). We, at Hi EV, are monitoring V2H closely and hope to be amongst the first to offer it when it becomes a viable option for these vehicles.

What’s the real-world cost to fully-charge my Kia EV9 from empty at home?

-On a standard variable tariff (approximately. 30p/kWh): 99.8 kWh X £0.30 = £29.94
-On a Smart EV Tariff (e.g., 7.5p/kWh overnight): 99.8kWh x £0.0075 = £7.49
Quite a saving, right? This dramatic saving is why we strongly recommend a smart charger and tariff switch for owners of EV’s with large batteries. Filling up for under a tenner is a game-changer.

Are there any specific charger brands you recommend for the Ioniq 6/EV9 to ensure full compatibility?

We recommend chargers that are OSCP (Open Smart Charging Protocol) compliant, as this is the standard Hyundai and Kia use for their smart features. Brands such as Ohme and Hypervolt are excellent choices…..they seamlessly integrate with the electric vehicle’s systems – and with energy apps such as Octopus Intelligent, allow for fully automated, cheapest-time charging – without any compatibility issues.

Can i use the Kia/Hyundai app to control my home charger, or do i need a separate app?

You’ll typically just use the charger manufacturer’s app (Ohme, Hypervolt, Zappi) for direct control of the charger’s settings, scheduling, and linking to the special tariffs from your energy provider. However, the beauty of a smart setup is that it works in harmony with your EV’s app. You can set the departure time in your Kia Access or Hyundai Bluelink app, and the car will communicate with the charger to ensure it’s ready to go – utilising grid power, or solar power of course, for pre-conditioning.
